Opeyemi Odusanya, 17-year-old student of Bowen University killed by Cultists

Opeyemi Odusanya, 17-year-old student of Bowen University killed by Cultists

The life of a 17-year-old student of Bowen University, Opeyemi Odusanya, has been cut short by some cult members in Lagos.
It was gathered that the undergraduate was murdered for allegedly rejecting sexual advances from some youths in the area and also for “being too proud.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim was a 300 level student of Biochemistry at the university.
Police authorities told our correspondent that Opeyemi was stabbed to death by the cultists at her parents’ house in the Alakuko area of Lagos on February 3, 2014.
Police sources told PUNCH Metro that investigations had revealed that the culprits were residents of the area.
A police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “In the afternoon of February 3, 2014, the deceased went to buy airtime for her telephone. As she was returning, a group of cult members trailed and entered the house with her.
“Opeyemi was alone at home when the guys entered. They instructed her to turn on the generator so that if she screamed, no one would hear.
“We believe that they wanted to rape the girl, but she must have put up a fierce struggle as the whole house was scattered.
“The guys subsequently stabbed her in the stomach several times and ripped out her intestines.
“After killing her, they took her phone and the keys to her parents’ vehicle, a jeep, which was on the table. They stole the jeep, which was parked in the compound, after killing the girl.”
The sources told our correspondent that after the guys had fled, they used Opeyemi’s telephone line to send a text message to her mother, explaining why they killed the 17-year-old.
The text message, which was typed in English and Yoruba languages, and made available to our correspondent, read, “Your child has been proud. We have been toasting her, but she has refused to accept. We have killed her to teach a lesson. We have also driven your car away.
“If you want your car back, come to Lakas Hotel or Cele Bus Stop around Mile 2 to pick it up. If we see policemen around, we will kill everybody.”
Residents of the area told our correspondent that the victim’s mother, Olayinka, had a panic attack after reading the message and quickly informed those that were with her.
However, a phone call from the family’s housemaid was said to have confirmed Olayinka’s fears that the text message was not a bluff.
It was learnt that she returned to the house to meet the lifeless body of her child.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the mother of the deceased, who is a senior official at the Mushin Local Government secretariat, later reported the incident at the Alakuko Police Division.
A police source told our correspondent that the murder weapon had been recovered.
“By all indications, the girl was not raped because her clothes were intact. The knife used in killing her has been recovered,” the policeman said.
It was gathered that the parents of the girl had relocated to the Redemption Camp on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Our correspondent, who visited the Facebook page of the deceased, observed that tributes had been pouring in for the 300 level student.
One of her friends, Folake Kuforiji, wrote, “RIP Dear, May your soul rest in perfect peace and may the Almighty God protect and console the rest of your family. A real gem is gone. I remember back then in secondary school when we used to call you Ope International. You left us too soon, but God knows best.”
A man, Adeniji Chigozie, who claimed to be her former teacher, wrote, “Remember those days in class. You were one of the students I cherished and respected. You were respectful and intelligent. As a teacher, I was very proud of you. The details of the cause of your death are still sketchy and confusing. Nigeria has lost another intelligent and beautiful mind – A great star has fallen!
“Above all, I wish your family and loved ones the fortitude to bear this shocking loss – May God in His gracious nature comfort them, amen!”
When contacted on the telephone, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, said, “I have called the Divisional Police Officer at the Alakuko Police Division and he said he was not aware of the incident.”

Suspected Ritualist escapes lynching at an IMSU hostel. (PHOTOS & VIDEO)

A suspected ritualist was almost lynched yesterday as at about 3pm in one of the hostels that shelter students of Imo State University. The man who goes by the name; Chikadibia, was caught boldly parading hostels and collecting used sanitary pads, ladies hair, disposed clothes as well as other used and disposed personal effects.
When some of the students noticed the unusual visitor dressed in a lunatic's regalia, Some confronted him and he repelled them cunningly by scaring them off by shouting on the girls that confronted him first, then told the boys that came later that he was been owed N10million by the owner of the hostel and that his car was packed outside as he showed them his car keys...noticing that he has been seen and his actions has alerted the hostel,

He tried to escape, but was caught by some bold and fearless students, who then demanded to know who he was...noticing that his diction, speech and composure had a vivid contrast to his dressing, they demanded to see what he had with him, the man instantly declined saying that it was all dirt, after much persuasion, the students who were now gathered in large number forced the plastic bucket with which he gathered the effects out of his hand, only to find out that the proposed madman cum trash-master was highly selective in what he trashed as they found out that he was busy combing the area for used sanitary pads, ladies hair, combs, books with names and the rest of them.

The angry mob instantly descended on him and almost lynched him in the bid to get a confession from him. That was when we got a call from one of the site's visitors, so we rushed down to the place, calmed the students down and then questioned the man...we observed that there was something fishy about the man as we questioned him, his speech and composure despite what he has gone through, was still coordinated as he told us he sold shoes in the market on normal days and that he just wanted to help in cleaning up the hostel...for charity. we also discovered a lot of car registration documents with him...both current and expired ones.
We asked him to give us a number of his family people so as to contact them but he declined and feigned that he has forgotten, whereas he remembered vividly that he lives at no 4. Rotobi in owerri and that he hails from Ikeduru in Imo state.
Vibesngists reporter at the scene instantly alerted the states' police command, who immediately responded to the situation, stormed the area and arrested the man...after questioning him and found out that he was fishy...They also remarked that they got such incidence recently and that its obvious that some people are on the loose to collect such things.

ANOTHER STRIKE LOOMS as ASUU accuses Nigerian Govt. of violating new agreement

The Nigerian Government has breached a section of an agreement it signed last year to end a five-month old strike by university lecturers on December 17, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has alleged.
The union said the government has failed to release the N20 billion it pledged, amongst other commitments, to universities at the beginning of each quarter of the year.
Speaking to journalists at the University of Ibadan, Friday evening, ASUU National Treasurer, Ademola Aremu, said part of the agreement reached with Federal Government was that the government would pay N20 billion at the start of each quarter to cater for areas of needs identified in the needs assessment carried on universities.

“This is February and the government is yet to release the money for the quarter,” Mr. Aremu said.
Mr. Aremu, who spoke on behalf of ASUU president, Nasir Fagge, said the union had to start raising the alarm now to avoid the embarrassment the last strike caused the nation and its education system.
Last year’s strike by the union paralysed academic activities in all public universities in the country for nearly six months, over ASUU’s insistence that Federal Government fulfil an agreement reached the union in 2009.
Describing the strike as needless but inevitable, Mr. Aremu recalled that if the government had been sincere, academic activities not be disrupted as is often the case when lecturers go on strike.
“All the strike ASUU had embarked upon in this country were basically because the Federal Government has failed to honour agreements freely entered to with us. It is also sad that before we begin each of those strike, we would give the government enough warnings and grace to make them retrace their steps. But they always fail,” Mr Aremu said.
“We don’t know why the government is always unwilling to implement the documents signed by their representatives. However, we will continue to fight for the system because if the system collapse we will collapse with it.”
Earlier, the ASUU chairman at the University of Ibadan, Olusegun Ajiboye, said it was unfortunate that successive governments in Nigeria don’t learn from history as they always wait till major standoff with their members before doing the needful.
He expressed appreciation to the Nigerian media for standing by ASUU during the struggle, adding that the support was not really for the members, but for a better Nigeria.
According to Mr. Ajiboye, the strike would not have recorded the level of success it did if the press did not stand by the lecturer.
He, however, said the struggles was not over yet, saying journalists must see it as duty to monitor proper disbursement of monies promised to be injected into the university system.
“You must ensure that every money is used for the purpose it is meant for.You must also challenge us to justify the fruit of the fight. When we are going astray, please do not keep quiet. That is your mandate as the fourth estate of the realm,” he said.
The ASUU boss also charged journalists to take deeper interest in the crisis rocking the Ibadan-based Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, CRIN, where he said the management was treating the staff in unfair manner.
Bayo Okunade, a professor of political science, who represented the UI Vice Chancellor, Isaac Adewole, said if the press had not communicated the demands of ASUU to Nigerians effectively, it would not get the public appeal it got, and may not have been a success.
